Mercury 135 outboard stalling out.

My Merc 135 outboard has developed a new problem. The symptoms:

* Will be running fine at mid to high speeds and then will suddenly stall out and die.

* After pumping the fuel line bulb a time or two, the engine will start right back up and run fine. But will then stall out again at speed.

* Engine will keep running at speed if my wife is at the throttle and I keep the bulb pumped up manually.

* There is fresh fuel in the tank which has also been treated with a bottle of Heet.

My diagnosis...the fuel pump is going out (or gone already). Any other possibilities before I buy the part and replace?

Always learning...and sharing what I've learned. The Scratch-Built Hot Rod.

Maybe a fuel tank venting problem?

I've got a Merc 175 Pro Xs on my 24 ft. tri-toon fishing rig. I've been using "Don's Cocktail since brand new and never had a, go to (may have to join to ask a question) then click "BBC boards", scroll way down to the outboard engine section and click on "Mercury 3 ltr. high perf" (I know yours is a problem) then click on "General product info and maintenance" scroll down a bit to "commonly asked questions" (we're gettin there) then scroll down 5 lines to "Oil, battery, spark plugs, fuel and fuel additives.......and then read......wheww!

Now Don Weed is the Moderator of that section , runs a dealership in So. Carolina...I think and is a genuine great guy and a whiz with Mercury engines. His "Cocktail is a mixture of three additives ...these are all added per 6 gals of gas, 1 oz. Merc Quickleen....1 oz. Seafoam....1 oz. Merc Quickcare or Marine Stabil.

I have a fishing buddy that has a 135 Merc Optimax that was running like chit, first time he used the "Cocktail" his problem disappeared. You may have a different problem, bad fuel filter, plugged line etc. You can ask a question on the forum and Don will get to you in no time at all, hope this helps and solves your problem.......Dave
