Post Metal Etch Better than Self-Etch Primer?

Any advantage to using metal etch, then primer...or just use self-etching primer?

Manual I have says to use metal etch, but what does the manual know? I have yet to see a manual paint a car.

I use the metal prep liquid (etches and leaves zinc phosphate coating) and then prime with acid etching primer but then I wear a belt and suspenders with my suit so I may be too cautious.
