Metal etch/prep

Well I have been using POR-15 on chassis and interiors (roofs, in doors, etc) on a lot of old cars I have restored and am restoring. I have had good success with POR-15 and always follow directions exactly. One thing I question though is their Metal Ready they sell for about $16 a quart (bottle). I found a product at Lowes that is greenish instead of blue and has the same chemicals in it (acid of course) as the Metal Ready and a LOT cheaper at only $6 a quart. I like to use this on rusted metal that I cannot sand blast and also like to throw rusted bolts in it for a day or two, etc.
Question I have is, is Jasco brand at Lowes the same thing at POR-15's Metal Ready?

Also, one more thing I forgot...
Do any of you guys use this stuff on a bare metal car before epoxy priming? I have always just cleaned the bare metal with a solvent based wax and grease remover followed up by a water based one (sometimes just Invisible Glass glass cleaner since it's clear) and then shot my epoxy. I know older guys told me about 5 years ago when I first got into painting that they like to wipe the car down with zinc and a metal rinse/etch before painting but never see anyone doing it anymore including myself...
Thanks for any info on this guys!

It's very unlikely they are the same product. I would beware using the interchangeably. Even if they have the same chemicals in them if the concentration is not the same you won't get the same results. It may work but who's to know long term and is it really worth the risk to save $10? Test it on some parts that are not jobs and see how she holds up.

On your metal prep for epoxy question you really have to look at what the manufacturer of the epoxy recommends. Some epoxies don't like an acid treated surface at all and it will cause massive adhesion loss. I learned that once with a Valspar primer VP50. It would not stick to an etched surface but a normal bare metal that was sanded and then W/G cleaned it sticks like nails.

Thanks for the info! As for the Jasco stuff, I wonder if it will be fine to use before applying POR-15? I have looked it up and people on hot rod forums have said they use it all the time and it works great. It removes the rust and adds zinc to the metal leaving a film that will need to be washed off with warm soap and water (like Metal Ready).
