starter shims.......

Hi,i have only had to shim 1 starter,i used a straightened out paper clip, then put it between flex plate teeth and starter teeth, then shimmed til it was a good fit. that was on a standard chev starter,i have never used a mini-starter. but,i think it would be the same way to check it.

I hope you didnt get a proform mini starter!
Proform Part #67052
I had so many issues with that starter (loosening and grinding)
finally pulled it to find the mounting block was cracked (cheap casting)
I went and bought a summit protorque starter and never needed shims and never had any issues.

There have been many problems discussed about the "mini" starters and most of them have boiled down to very poor quality control of the casting and machining of the mounting frame. If your starter gear is too close to the flex plate, the starter will not engage. Shimming will move it away from the plate and engagement will occur. If it is too far away, skipping will occur and there is no fix for this except milling off some material from the mounting frame surface, which is not practical unless you have a milling machine and the ability to use it with skill and precision. The best thing to do is return this starter and keep trying until you find one that is manufactured correctly or give up and order a quality one such as Power Master.
