mini starter problems

im working on 1962 chevy nova just drope in a 383 stroker with a 350 turbo trans but haveing problems with the starter i bolted the starter to the engine with no shims because with shims the starter was not grabing on the flex plate ok. i started a couple of times with no problems but once i let the engine run for like tens minutes and turn of the engine to tray to start the engine back on i here the starter grinding againts the flex plate could be that the engine gets harder to start when its hot or bad mini starter
