Mini starter works only intermittently?

I have a Powermaster ultra torque starter part number 9426 which works only on occasion. I can start the car lets say ten times and it will start up no problem or grinding or buzzing, then i may try to start it later and it makes a buzzing noise, but i don't think its grinding the teeth on the flywheel. If it needed shimmed would it not make a grinding type noise all the time? The warranty is up on this starter, also i used it in a prior application with no problems. I just installed it in my current project. This starter was almost 300 dollars when i bought it, does anyone know what the problem may be?

Probably needs a solenoid. Many starter and alternator shops could repair it for you, or get you the part.

make sure it is properly grounded. Poor grounds can cause this type of malfunction.

Thanks for the responses, ill check the ground and if that doesn't work i see if its the solenoid, hopefully its one of the the two.
