Mini tub, narrow rear first or buy wheels first?

I've got a 40 Chevy Coupe and would like to mini tub it. My question is do I narrow the rear end and purchase wheels to fit first or do I purchase wheels and narrow rear end to fit? I'm looking to use a 9" ford. Any info. Would help. The car has rear fiberglass fenders that are 2" wider than stock and has a 57 chevy rear end in it now. I'm am planning on putting a disc kit on it as well as air ride system. I'm not looking to build a monster just a good daily highway cruiser. I've seen where people are starting to use ford explorer rear ends. Any suggestions that might help in the direction that I'm wanting to go? THANKS.

I put huge slicks under a 240Z drag car I built, I found it much easier to buy the tires and rims, put them under it and make the rear end fit. Gives you something to measure to since you'll be fabricating anyway.

Ditto...
I never do any cutting until I have the actual tires and wheels on hand and mounted. What type of suspension are you planning? With some judicious measuring you can probably use the existing rear end and simply build some wheels to work with your mini-tub and suspension relocation...

Thanks for the help guys. My reason for a possible mini tub is I really like the look of a deep wheel with a lot of lip showing. Right now the rear wheels are McLean wire wheels which I don't really like. I would like a little wider tire and the tire that is on there now clears the fender and frame on the inside about 1/4" so there is no room to go wider. Also I plan on an air ride system and will need extra space for tire to tuck in fenders when dropped. I figure if I'm going to change the rear end now is the time to narrow, go wider on tires and mini tub. Just need to know where to start and in the right order for good results. Thanks again for your help.
