Mismatched Main Caps

Hey guys I am in the steps of assembling my rotating assembly for my 383 to check clearances and I have stumbled upon a problem. I took off all the caps from the block to have them cleaned and install the bearings in them and now I am unsure of the order of two of them. I am kicking myself now because I should have clearly marked the caps before removing them but I do not even know if they were on the block in the correct positions when I acquired it. I know where the front and rear cap go (obvious) but the middle 3 are all identical and they are stamped. One of them has a "1" stamped on it but for some reason the other 2 both have the number "2" stamped on them. Do you guys know of any other way to determine which cap goes where and what would the numbers mean, I'm assuming the cap marked "1" means closest to the front of the block
Any and all help would be great because I would not want to mate the caps wit the wrong surface on the block.
Thanks again guys,
Keith

they don't have arrows? you can just torque them down, check the clearences with a plastigage, until each and every one looks right, or pay a machine shop to do the same thing

If you have a good eye. Look at the parting lines of the caps and match the tooling/scratch marks in the bores up with those on the block. I have matched up dozens of blocks this way. The marks tend to be very individual to each cap/block combination.

I did the same thing with my engine. Had them stacked up I thought they would go undisturbed. Wrong. When I had it machined and tanked the shop put all back in where they are supposed to be (maybe, I hope).

Thanks for the fast help guys, I think I will do do what you recommended and check the parting lines for the cap and block bore.

P.S.- yes all the caps do have arrows but this just tells which direction to place them, not what order.
