Miss-Firing HEI
Here's how it happened:
We were hot rodding around town Friday night. Driving the cars pretty hard. We had made a couple WOT jaunts. Eventually my buddies 67 Camaro started acting up. He went to open it up, I heard it start to stumble, then it started back-firing all over the place (out the tale pipe). The car will idle and rev fine, but as soon as you put any load on it, it starts to back fire and will die. He replaced the module (GM HEI). Initially he thought it fixed the problem. The car was back to normal. However after about 20 minutes of driving the same problem arose. So then he replaced the coil. Same song. After about 20 minutes of driving the ignition will missfire under ANY load. So what's next? Any ideas? Will the magnetic pickup cause a problem such as this? How about the little silver capacitor/canister looking thing that is connected to the module wiring? |

I'll have him take a look at that tonight. I gave him an old, working one I had laying around for him to use as reference/parts.

Check the button under the coil for wear and arround it for carbon tracking. This is a common issue. If it is questionable at all change the cap and button with a quality cap. A new cap will usuall come with the button and rubber washer/insulator. You may also want to check to be sure you have full battery voltage at teh b+ terminal on the cap.
