Model A - Automatic to Manual Trans
I have a 1930 Model A with a 350 chev engine and a 350 automatic trans. I want to convert it to a 5 speed overdrive manual (or 4 speed). Has anyone done this job recently? Will the 5 speed bolt up?
I'm concerned with clutch pedal/throw out bearing/
shifter position. Will the shifter be too far back with the stock bench seat? Any concerns with the flywheel size?
I'm doing a 454 4 speed swap in my 30 Model A and I found that the 55 - 57 Chevy benchseat Hurst shifter will clear the seat in my car. Still working on clutch linkage though. Not much room down there for all those rods and stuff. I've thought about using a hydraulic clutch, but I'm saving that as a last resort. I used a swap meet scattershield for the bellhousing. It was only 80 bucks. Got the shifter at another swap meet for 125 bucks.
I have a Muncie 4 speed in my 30 Model A and I think you would be better off staying with your automatic transmission. In order to be able to shift the transmission I had to heat up the shift rod with a torch and make it almost completely straight. This was done so the shifter would clear the bench seat. That shifter comes right up between your legs and takes a lot of getting used to when you drive the car. Its not comfortable. I had a terrible time installing the clutch linkage and I can bearly adjust the throw out bearing so it does not ride on the pressure plate all the time. You might want to consider a hydrolic clutch because of space problems. If you push the clutch and the brake pedal in at the same time the pedals interfear with each other. All things considered you are better off with the automatic. If you think it slips too much you might consider a rebuild or shift kit. If you go with the 5 speed manual you are constantly shifting gears in city traffic. Its alot of effort just to drive the car. My 2 cents.
