Model A hidden or suicide hinges.

Has anyone ever installed hidden hinges on a model A coupe 1931?I want to but have never seen it so I don't know if it is because of space constraints. Just want some input before I start cutting up my car. Thanks.

I did a customers 31 Ford "Vicky". The customer was 300 lbs. For him to get into the car, I swung the doors from the rear post and did hidden hinges. A lot of work and the hinges still intrude into the interior more than I am comfortable with. Any "strap" type of hidden hinge has to clear the post and swing the door far enuff to get driver inside. The more swing, the more the hinge intrudes when closed.

I just sold a 28 Essex coupe. It had a very novel "suicide" factory door pivot. A very large Piano hinge..

I have seen those but not for me. I thank you for the info. I am not a big person and my wife is even smaller so I don't need them to open at a 90 degree but I do want a reasonable opening. I am replacing all the wood with metal so if I have to I will make the post narrower so they will work. Thanks again. It might take me a while but I will post pics when done.

Model A Hidden Hinges

28 Sedan, flipped the doors to suicide them, made some hidden hinges, stretched the door opening so doors are flush, haven't made the jam yet but I test hung a door yesterday, I need to make some adjustments but it seems to be working very well. Hinges are completely hidden inside and out. Doors open wide. My computer is on the blink so I can't post. I'll take some pic's and post when I get it back.
Lon.

frenched hinges ?

I remember looking at the frenched hinges, lights in the mid 50's. and the how to' in the little books. I have been thinking about doing frenched hinges on the 31 nash roadster, and frenching in the 51 buick tail lights, I tried to form a french panel when I did the lower back panel but didn't like the way the test panel looked, I'll probably use some 3/8 rod. Probably use the Buick nail head to stay Oldschool.

I put Carolina Customs hidden hinges in my '31 with the door opening in the normal direction. It was a real job to get then in there correctly.

I didn't do hidden hinges on my '31 as I thought the time invested wasn't worth the final outcome. I just rebuilt a set of stockers with Oilite bushings and hardened rod for a pin. Then did the bear claw latches - that mod to me was worth the time and the few bucks to keep my roadster's doors from swinging open after a nasty bump on one of our great roads - they do work as designed
