Modulator Valve Mustang 1965

Well, we run a driver's club here in Switzerland and have among other amercian beauties 3 Mustangs running, a 65 convertible, a 66 Coupé and a 68 Coupé. It is at times a bit challenging to keep them all on the road. We just run into an automatic gear box problem as the Modulator valve of the 65 is gone but according to NPD they have no more stock. Is there anyone out there who could give us a hint as to find the right spare? Thanks Urs

Welcome aboard since this is your first post

Since you have most likely a C4 transmission, these are readily available at almost any car parts store in the US. Unfortunately, you aren't in the US. NPD is not the best source for this kind of part as it is a commodity item and is often (usually!!) overpriced at specialty stores.

Here is a very good source for the "standard" kind of parts and where many of us purchase good, name brand items and they do ship internationally.

For this part, I recommend the Standard or the Fram

There is not too much that goes wrong with a C4 transmission. They are a simple and dependable unit compared to the current. A leaking modulator valve can cause fluid loss especially if you don't see external dripping as it is directly connected to a manifold vacuum source.

If you see visible leaking, then you suspect the transmission pan gasket. Again, Rock Auto for a new gasket (I buy 3 at a time as my local car parts store doesn't stock parts that old), straighten out the pan mounting holes, or replace the pan. There is a very narrow rail area, about 1", that will cause a leak.

If the car has a later year transmission which has the dipstick mounted in the transmission case instead of the side of the pan, then that is a place to look as well. Occasionally though the pan mount transmission dipstick versions leak as well.

Good luck

Dave W
