Good old Johnson's Paste Wax is an excellent mold release for fiberglass mold making. I was taught to wax the surface thoroughly, five times. Spray on gel-coat, then lay up enough glass to be rigid. For a one off, 3-4 layers of 1 1/2 oz matt should be enough. A production mold should be much thicker. And it would need extra bracing.
Using this method yields an exact reverse copy of the surface. I tested it once on a door window. The brand and identification etching was perfectly visible in the gel-coat when it was removed. If you're afraid of trusting just the wax, you can mist on a coat of PVA- Poly-Vinyl-Alcohol. PVA is a water soluable release agent. This process can be done without gel-coat, by using straight resin. I think the gel-coat is worth the trouble. I used to manufacture Corvette parts using Feather-Fil as the gel-coat. That made it easier to block sand before painting. |
