What makes the monte carlo ss 305 h.o. motor h.o. ?

Compression and maybe cam. Non-HO motors were 150 hp with 8:1. HO motors were 190 hp with 8.5:1 if I recall correctly. The cams were both remarkably mild, but I think I remember that the HO cam had a tiny bit more duration.

cam and compression the regular 305 of the years were around 150 hp and 8.6:1 compression and the HO was 170-190hp and 9.3:1 compression

I have a camaro HO(190 hp rating with cats and smog crap) in my truck(emissions exempt former diesel so no smog or cats) bored 20 headers dauls homemade chambered mufflers 600cfm edelbroc carb performer eps intake inch open spacer intake ports appear to have been ported.HP now??? for a 305 they do run good.IIRC the factory put somethin like a 350 stock cam in them

stock base low compression 305's had a dished piston and a very small camshaft.
The 305HO L-69 motor had a flat top high compression piston and a special larger camshaft.
around 202-207@.050" and .405-.415" lift
The 305HO Monte Carlo came with a special th2004r transmission with a unique high stall lock up converter and high rear rear ratio.
305HO up to 86 had the #416 heads. 87 used the #081 heads from the 305TPI motor.
