first you need to verify TDC on 1 and make sure your distributor is not 180 out.

Start with a genuine factory service manual......

Or a reprint of the original for a little less money....

i took the plug out turned it over till it blew the air out of the plug hole then i put the balancer mark on the 0 degree mark which i didn't have to turn the crack much to do that and stuck a screwdriver in the plug hole and the pistons up i took the valve cover off and the rocker arms are both up and the rotor button is pointing towards the front of the motor but it wont start and backfires still im just not to sure on where to put the rotor button.

First thing you should do is STOP making DUPLICATE POSTS.
You will get better results keeping ONE post for the information you are looking for. And you will make my job easier.

Well, apparently the whole mess is the same as a SBC, as far as cylinder numbering, firing order and rotor direction. So, read this tutorial and you should be able to get the motor running.....
http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...stment_SBC/BBC

You probably made the common mistake of trying to time the motor just after installing the cam at 6 and 12. The motor was on #6 TDC firing, not #1. You have to rotate the crank one full revolution to have the marks at 12 and 12 in order to have the #1 cylinder on the compression/firing stroke.

yeah I tried and tried to do 6 and 12 after I put the new cam in but all it would do was backfire through the tbi so so I brought it back to tdc and noticed the cam was at 12 not 6 I took the distributor cap off and it was 180 off so I turned it around and it fired up so I put it back to together and started back up and it backfires if you get on the gas like its still off and it wont run unless its advanced all the way and it wont go when put into gear.

when I brought it back to tdc with the cam and crank both at 12 when I took the distributor cap off the rotor button was pointing toward the fire wall so I turned it 180 and it pointed toward the front of the motor
