More... "busy Saturday in Tucson"
5 Attachment(s)
In the evening I got out to the IHRA Nitro Jam. This is a showcase event, which featured more actual sportsman competition on Friday... but I went for the final extravaganza on Saturday evening.
The finale was as much about entertainment, as it was for competition. Still a good show, with modern Fuelers... Nostalgia Funnies... Nostalgia Fuel Altereds... Junior Dragsters... Nitro Harleys... jet cars... the Shockwave jet truck... and the Jelly Belly wheelie stage coach. Here are a few pictures... |

Good looking cars. Looks like you had good weather and a lot of fun.

like the stagekoach reminds me of the old Raiders hotrod barris built only this one has a blower and does wheel stands
|
The Jelly Belly Stage was here a week ago on Saturday... and today I saw it on the coverage of the Las Vegas NHRA race, doing exhibition runs there! :-)

Cool pictures! many of those cars are at Famoso for the March Meet and the nostalgia drags, about 4 times a year. Come on out if you get a chance. i am going to look for a IHRA meet in Cali, I would love to see their show out here.

DAN!!!! Which meets are you going to this year at Formosa? if things go right, I hope to make it down again, most likely the CHRR

When I moved here in '75, Tucson was an AHRA town. We had the AHRA Winternationals... the Fuel Altered Nationals... and a large local racer involvement. It was an exciting time! Eventually we lost that track, and when the new one was built, it was NHRA sanctioned. We then had a divisional points meet... the Altered Nationals... a large nostalgia event... a jet car event... and the Pro classes held preseason testing here, so we got to talk to our heros, see their new equipment... and see what 300MPH looked like! I actually willingly spent time at the top end of the track, for the first time! :-) Unfortunately, having Phoenix 100 miles away, we never got a national event, and eventually NHRA moved away. I was relieved to see IHRA be willing to come here, or we may have ended up with no local track. We have a large nostalgia event happening May 5th. :-)~ |
Ed Outlaw Jones,
Ed lives a few miles south, Now campaigns an exibition wheelstanding Fire truck, and they inject some candy smell into the fuel. and additive to make plenty of visible flames when it burns down the track.

jet cars
I remember when Romeo Palamedes scorched paint on the parked spectators cars when he ran the jet car at Fremont Ca in the mid 60's
|
I also remember seeing the Green Momba (sp?) at Fremont and it blew the fence down behind he bleach box! We are talking BLEW it apart with sheets of plywood floating down like pieces of paper. It then raced and the chute opened then collapsed! The car went off the end of the track thru a barbed wire fence out into the field next door.
