More Carb Questions-Qjet, Edelbrock, Jet, SMI-Pros And Cons

I HAVE to replace my carb, and I want to make the best choice. In Qjets thers Tomco for 250, Summit and Jegs for around 300, Jet and SMI for around 400. Or for about 500 I can go with a manifold and carb from Edelbrock and others.

I have no experience with the aftermarket carbs, only the Qjet, and I can't say it has been a great experience.

I know the battle of the carbs has been beat to death.

I'm looking for pros and cons of going aftermarket and maybe experience with the above suppliers of Qjets.

I don't want to spend 300-400 and be sorry. Same for aftermarket.

I used a SMI Quadrajet. I was fairly satisfied with it. The only issue with it was the electric choke. When it was connected to a power source and you started the car cold, it would kick on fast idle and stay there a long time. Then when it finally came down to normal idle and I could be sitting at a red light or going down the road. All of a sudden out of no where the high idle would kick back on and the car would take off or at a stop sign and I`d be holding the brakes down with both feet trying to keep it from taking off. Finally I disconnected it and tied it open. It`s still in use today and it`s been a good carb. Looking back on it now I kind of wish I would have just gotten a Jet model. You could do a web search on summit and jegs Quadrajets just to see what those who have bought one think of them.

Doesn't sound like it was all you were hoping for.

I had that happen on an Edelbrock 650 and had to adjust the electric choke. It was just staying on too late is all.

I wouldn`t say it wasn`t all I was hoping for. I did attempt to adjust the electric choke but it still acted the same. Since SMI is a indepedant company I felt like maybe he wasn`t putting enough attention to detail into the carbs.
Jet is a major company who handles many methods of fuel delivery so I thought maybe they were a little more stricter in quality control but I could be wrong. I sold that carb to my best friend and he runs it on his Vortec 350. It`s really a strong runner and it`ll plant you hard in the seat. It has RHS Vortec heads, a comp roller cam, jet hot headers, 10:1 compression. A
TH350 auto trans, 3.42 gears with positraction. It`s in a `84 cutlass 2 door and it`s his daily driver. His work place is 20 miles there so that`s a 40 mile round tripper 5 to 6 days a week. He can fill it up on a sunday night on his way into work and not have to refill it again until the next sunday night which is pretty good for a hot rod, but that`s one of the nice benefits of a Quadrajet. I`ve ran Holley`s, Edelbrocks, Demons, and I`ll never fool with another one of the three again. Quadrajets are what I started out with and what I returned to.

Haven't had much luck with the web search. Haven't had a lot of luck with qjets either so far. What would stink is to commit to a change and modify everything only to want to change it back later.

If it helps any..I used to only run holley or demon carbs, got into a money tight sometime last year and had to replace my holley 650 double pumper mech. secondary with a cheap off the shelf eldrbrock 600 (1405) and i love the carb! Matter of fact replaced another trucks carb w/an eldr also (1406) and havent had a problem yet!!
