Yup, the mothballs will increase the octane rating and get you better fuel economy.

But only if you use naphthalene moth balls, which I haven't seen since the 70's.

That was a remedy they used back in the '30's and '40's and possibly into the '50's before gas octane went up, after that I don't think it did much good. I don't know if it would work with today's new fuel blends.

jimfulco hit it rite on the head.

Try putting some in now and you will be trying to unplug your gas lines. Its all false now since naphthalene is not used any more.

It's a mind over matter thing. And no....dropping in a handful of mothballs will not shave 2 seconds off of your E.T. like you hope it would.

That was big in Vietnam with the M60 Tank Drivers which burns diesel fuel -- they claimed it made a difference.

i think they proved somewhere that the "right" mothballs will work.

I think they also determined that bleach was much worse than sugar in a gas tank.

Mythbusters did that on a recent episode. They had a 350 Chevy that they dumped literally everything in, sugar, bleach and a host of other nasty ingredients. They also dumped in some math balls into the fuel tank. The 350 gained about 500 rpm on the idle and sounded better. Of course by that time it was pretty much trashed, so it's not like it was scientific test.
