Motor And Trans In Baby!!!

I put my motor and trans in today. I'm excited and have a lot to say so please read the whole story. Since January my 350(GM crate motor) has been done, my dad and I put the Comp cam, springs, lifters ect in. Changed to a Cloyes true double roller timing chain, manifold, Performer RPM was on, had a new distributor, carb, plug wires, headers, ect. everything I needed to put it in and get it running. I got the trans back around the same time 200-4R, rebuilt with a Fairbanks Racing Automatics kit, billet servo, 13 vane pump, heat treated sun gear shell, heat treated stator shaft, ect. I had to bring all the parts to the guy who was rebuilding it so I did my homework and got everything needed to make the transmission almost indestructible.

My dad works 55-70 sometimes 80 hours a week as freight car repairman for the railroad just so we aren't broke so I understand he is usually tired and in the winter he didn't want to freeze putting the motor in. Ok so spring came, lots of great weather, I would ask him almost every Friday if he wanted to put the motor/trans in over the weekend. I usually got a no we have to do blah blah blah this weekend or I need to relax today. This went on through spring, through the summer. At this point I'm kind of getting blown off when I ask about working on the car. I didn't have any problem with putting it myself but since the two us worked on the car so much I wanted him to be apart of it going together.

Last weekend my dad made a joke that in five years he would have to sell the house and move into a little shack so he could afford to buy a new car. I said "it better have a garage," he said "why" I said because "we probably won't have that freaking engine in the car by then." He got pretty pissed off and told me if I wanted it in, put in the hell in.

So today my 2:30 English class was canceled so I skipped my 1:30 math. I got home around 11:00, little brother was home because of a teacher in service day, he had one of his friends over, and my mom was home. At 12:00 I started putting the motor and trans in, the three of them "helped me" and I got the motor and trans bolted in, in 1 hour and 45 minutes!

Congrats, Ghetto Jet, Kind of makes you feel good to accomplish something doesn't it? Is that crate motor the universal replacement 350 or is it a performance crate?

Have a white 86 Caprice coupe with a 305 that had been blown up.

I'll try to get some pictures up.

I'm going back out to work on it more.

Hmm well it seems my headers don't fit as well as Hooker thinks they should. After I get done eating something I'll try to come in from the bottom with them.

Hey Killer are you happy now? (killer's been riding my * to get this done off the board.)

It's the universal 350. Not a bad deal $1300, 4 bolt mains, PM rods and a 3 year 50,000 warranty. I put a Comp XE268 cam in it. Should run strong.

Good going Ghetto.
Ive put the headers in and wired off to the side before so after the motos in you can move them accordingly.
You can always unbolt and jack up one side a little, then the other. Congrats. HG

had to drop in the headers before the engine

wouldn't go in from the top with the engine in place and wouldn't go in from the bottom either. Had to pull the engine up out of the way and drop in the headers then set the engine down. How did your instillation go?

Oh man, I just got in from putting the drivers side header on. I had to undo one motor mount and lift the motor, like tazz said, with the hoist to get enough space to drop the header down. I had a big clearance problem with the brace that connects from the frame to the control arm. My dad and I really had to cut the brace up with the torch. My dad has to take it to work to reinforce what metal is left.

The passenger side is going to be worse, that header is hitting the boxed area coming off the frame that a control arm bushing is inside of. .
