Jim,
4000 as an inter-coat-fast activator and fast reducer-1:1:1.
How soon have you taped it for next color. Garage is 80 degrees and have six colors to do. Hate to do one a night and was thinking one before work and one after work.
Shot first one at 11:00 and its 12:45 now and seems ready??
Thanks
Barry

hi barry,

i ususally use clear basecoat or hok intercoat clear which is really the same thing to protect one color from tape marks and such when spraying for the next color. i never use 4000 as in intercoat i guess because of build and becuse you would have to sand before clearing the whole piece.

i would normally let the clear base dry atleast few hours so i would think you would be ok if you sprayed in the morning then taped it off in the evening. 1hr 45min might be pushing a little, i would feel safer letting sit a little longer. one thing i have done is take your finger and put it on the clear and lightly put some pressure. let sit there for a minute then move your finger to see if your print is in the clear. if it is, its probably too soon. having tape sitting on the clear is like the same thing. its applying a constant pressure to the surface plus the solvents from your next color dont help either, that seems to help etch the tape into the clear. if the clear is too soft and the marks are too bad you'll see it imprint through the clear into a pearl or metallic. solids no problem. by the way...the vette turned out beautiful. i'll get you some pics once the owner gets a little furthur along with putting it back together.

At 1:30 I sprayed next color, I think it helped that I gritted my teeth as I sprayed.
At 6:00 sprayed next color, so I lucked out and ahead of schedule.
no tape marks, but was more afraid of frying!

I did put a short wave on for 30 minutes after each spraying so cheated a little.
