MSD 6a to GM Hei

Hi guys!

Today I got myselfe a MSD 6a unit to upgrade the stock GM Hei ignition I run in my modified 69´ 400cui Pontiac.

Will the ignition box alone be any good, or do I have to upgrade to a different coil/cap as well?

Markus

It'll work but a new higher output coil would be complete.

With the MSD box you can eliminate the internal HEI ignition amplifier.

The stock OEM HEI coil is fine. But.....The high resistance center post/pin under the HEI coil
in the cap needs to be replaced with a (MSD) steel pin. The MSD HEI coil is a good one.

Here are the MSD Instructions scroll down for the box to HEI wiring diagram.
You´ll need the MSD harnesses MSD-8861 and MSD-8860.

Hi folks!

I recently installed the MSD 6a. Idle became a little better and somehow, the engine not just sounds a lot more powerful, it even helped to get the big old lady off the line a little quicker! BUT a new problem occured! The engine now starts pinging at WOT (~3500rpm) or on a hill. When I accelerate at about 3/4 throttle and on a level road it´s fine.

I filled her up with premium gas plus lead substitude. Now the pinging is gone, but I lost a lot of performance. How can that be?

With "Plus" gas, my Pontiac used to smoked the tires as long as i put the throttle down. Now it doesn´t even squeak a little.

Does anybody have an idea how this can be?
