MSD 8365 HEI, no spark after setting rev limiter

I was reading another post in regards to the MSD 8394 E-Curve. http://www.hotrodders.com/showthread.php?t=66113 They guy had to jump his car everytime he tried to start it after installing this dist.

I purchased an MSD 8365 HEI. Mine worked fine until I adjusted the rev limiter. Now it has no spark. I have 12.3 volts at coil and 10.2 at coil while cranking. Anyone else have the same problems with either of these distributors?

Just curious, but where did you set the rev limiter at?

I moved from 8000 rpm down to 7000 rpm. It is adjustable between 10,000 and 5000.

10.2 volts sounds too low to get a spark. What is the voltage across the battery when cranking? If it's also 10.2 than you just had the unfortunate coincidence of a battery dying at the same time you adjusted your limiter. Easy to check by jumping or putting a fully charged battery in and see if it starts.

If you have 11.5-12v across the battery then you have a wiring issue somewhere. I'd check the wiring and perhaps install a relay driven by the ignition switch so you can get 12v straight from the battery.

Battery is new. 3 days old. fully charged. The power to the dist is 12.2 in on position. 10.3 in crank position. Before I reset rev limiter. 13.4 volts at dist running.

I feel there is a problem with these adjustable distributors and MSD isn't admitting to it. So I wanted to see how many ppl on here have had problems with them. They are new to the market. I was on a waiting list to get one.

The only other person I have found who has used one is having problems too.

I just had the same problem with my MSD 8365 at a car cruise with my '79 Monza's 355 SBC. Got there and then wouldn't start. No spark at the plugs. Towed her home and put in the stock HEI and no problem starting. Going to take the MSD back and ask for another one. Maybe its a bad batch and we'll see if another one works. Stay tuned.

Doc here,

After reading the instructions for that rev limiter, It says in the Text that small increment movements make big RPM changes (Eluding to the 5 to 10 index may not be CLOSE to accurate..)

Try going BACK to the start point and see if you regain spark, and if so..you may need to hand tach the limit..while turning the preset CCW in Very small increments..

In other words, the limiter MAY be out of Fire range right now..

Just a logical guess..

Doc
