MSD vs. Pertronix flamethrower

Im going to rebuild my HEI distributor because im having some arcing problems and Im getting a MSD 6AL box and im gonna get a rebuild kit from Either msd or pertronix flamethrower rebuild kit. My question is which rebuild kit is better. this is gonna be a fairly mild engine but want to be able to get pretty crazy 500+ hp with this set up.

I run a pertronix set up, but for the power your looking at, you ought to get a msd. but the pertronix would most likely handle anything you could throw at it.

will the msd out perform the pertronix? on paper specs from the manufacturer look better for pertronix but i know this isnt always true and thats why im asking you guys. the price is within 10 dollars so either one is fine i just need some opinions on which to get.

Also the pertronix looks like a better kit coming with a vacuum canister and other stuff the msd doesnt come with.
Here are the kits.
MSD

PERTRONIX

Why not spend a little more and get an MSD dis. to go with the 6AL box? The system really is great. Im sure that either system you go with will work fine for you. I can only speak for MSD but they have a really great set up. When I redid my HEI I went and got the whole MSD system because everything was old and tired. Just a thought though.

what dist. would you recomend for under 200 bucks?

edit: looking at distributors and am trying to figure out what i need and how much it would cost. I need a distributor with a coil and a tach drive. I need to be able to just swap this out with the current one and i cant spend more than 200 on the dist. thats why im thinking about the rebuild kits.

for the money, the pertronix looks like a better deal.

but i'm thinking along the same lines as Chris, throw the good stuff in it. the 6al will be wasted somewhat with an hei distributor.

have you checked ebay?

jegs part# 121-8361

im kinda new to this thing. So do you not need a full HEI with the 6AL box, so I dont need a dist with a coil when i have the box?

I agree with Larry check ebay out I got my whole system off there and saved around $50. If you look a jegs the 85551 is $205 thats without the vac. advance. The one with it is 8361 and that cost $189.
So for a little over what you would pay to rebuild yo can get a system ready to go together. From what I have learned it is a good idea to keep systems matching. Do a search on ebay and see if you come up with any results based on those part#. Good luck!

hei is a stand alone deal. no box needed.

but if your getting the 6al, you'll need a coil and distributor for it to work.

the only downside to an hei that i know of, is they fall on their face above 5k rpm's.

ok i have a tach that runs off of a little spade that plugs into the dist what would i need to make that work on a 6AL set up? and also when i click on those probillet dist it says it will only work with the 7,8,9 series ignitions. Is that true or a typo.

From jegs website, "Installation: Most MSD Distributors must be used with an MSD Blaster Ignition, 6, 7, 8 or 10 Series Ignition Control. Only the Pro-Billet Ready-to-Run and Pro-Billet HEI Chevrolet models can be used without an MSD Ignition."

I don't know why you couldn't run your tach off the coil.
what kind of tach?

When you get the box it works with the dis. and a blaster coil.(from MSD) I looked at the MSD Website and the 85551 says it works with 6, 7, 8, or 10box.
8361 says the same.

There is a hookup on the box for a tach. There has been some problems with tach's not reading correctly with the box. They make adapters if this is the case.
