Muffler fabrication questions

Im building a custom porsche 911 with a vw engine in it.. however they dont make an exhasut system fitting my needs. i plan on making a stainless steel muffler but i need to know a couple things first. i want the muffler to be a 1 in 2 out design. the muffler will be similar to the mufflers found on late 80/s early 90s firebirds and camaros. does any one have a cut away of one of these? i dont know how to get the 1 pipe to merge with the 2. one side will have an inlet and and outlet.. the other side will have an outlet in the same spot as the other side outlet. also where do i get the perforated tubing and packing to build this.. thanks

A muffler with internal tubes and baffling like this should work well for ya.
You can make your own perforated pipe by drilling many small holes in them.
Use the course steel wool found in hardware stores.

Those guys have a number of different sizes available in the 80 series which is close to what you need might be a good idea to check them out before spending a good dela of time and money roling yer own..

If you pack it full of steel wool there's going to be some serious backpressure problems. You could leave it open like a turbo muffler design with no packing. Turbo mufflers are just regular mufflers with no packing. Another option would be to make a perforated sheetmetal shell that goes around the tubes then wrap that with steelwool or glass then put your outside case over that. With a 3.5"inlet it sounds like there is going to be a need for some airflow so you're going to need open areas between the internal tubes. I think you've got a cool idea---making your own muffler!

No offense, but I can't imagine any VW engine ever made needs a 3.5" inlet, and, for maximum performance, your exhaust system should be sized to the engine's capabilities.

Call Flowmaster, give them your engine specs and they'll tell you the best choice in mufflers. There's more flow technology in an exhaust system than most people realize. It's not all just "big pipes."

Well im using a vw engine out of a 94 passat.. vr6.. its being built for a big turbo set up pushing around 650hp to the wheels. its liquid cooled and still in the same family.. my second choice was a subaru engine but i cant see myself putting japanese parts in this thing.

It is sized for this set up.. im not just throwing crap together. im getting my engine info from a freind that had the same set up in his 1998 vw gti he went 10.4 in the quarter.. but he didnt have a muffler on his.

With a turbo set up it doesnt really affect it.
