Muffler placement
 
I know this may seem like a stupid question, especially to you hot rod builders that have made more than one car, but I have to ask any how. When building the exhaust system, at what point do most of you install your mufflers? That is, after running the exhaust pipe, off of the header, how long do you make the exhaust pipe and then where do you attach the muffler(s)?

One last thing. As I am computer illiterate, how do I look for my thread and add to it? Such as more pictures,progress, etc.

Not sure what your asking? I'm gonna try and answer your question anyways. It depends on what your purpose is on the exhaust. The further back you go with the mufflers, the quieter the exhaust will be. If you add pipes out to the rear of the car, it's even quieter. Then there are several mufflers to choose from, some are quiet, some are loud. You also have to consider pipe diameter. 2 inch will be the quietest, most guys run the 2.5" and the guys who want to pound the ground go with 3". You have to consider backpressure as well and the type of motor your running the exhaust to. If it's a normal street rod for crusing etc. I'd recommend going with 2.5" pipe and mount the muffler just before the rearend. You can use turndowns so the exhaust hits the street. If that's too loud, you can always run some pipe after the mufflers. I like a little sound to my exhaust so I run Flowmaster mufflers. As far as pictures, etc. someone else will have help out there.

Thanks for the info. I am running a sbc 350, 330 horse in my Volkswagen Squareback It is going to be a street cruiser and would like a nice mellow sound from the exhaust. Don't know if you are familar with the Squareback, but it is a longer body VW with the same wheelbase, 94.5", as a VW Bug. I am only gonna run it as a 2-seater though. Attached, are some pics.

I had a1964 Ford Galaxy w/ 390 dual exhaust, the 1st exhaust system i had was mufflers right under the seats with a an H connector front and rear of the glass packs. years later I had the exhaust stock from Ford same car but mufflers were under rear quarter panels with a 3 or 4 inch extension coming out of the rear. my point is that I never felt any difference in torque or power between the 2 different exhaust systems. I ran the car for 22 years by the way,, By far the best car I ever owned bar none

Very cool project. I'm very familiar with the VW's. The distance from your headers to the back of the vehicle is much shorter than that of many cars. Therefore, your exhaust will be louder unless you go with either a 2.25" or 2" pipe. You can also use the 2.5" and purchase some milder mufflers. Magnaflow makes a set which would sound pretty good. Sometimes a muffler shop will put various muffler on so you can hear the sound and loudness. Being that your putting the SBC in a VW, I would personally like to have people know there is a V8 sitting under the hood. I'm not an exhaust expert, but I would think 2.5" pipe to a mellow muffler going to your rear axle would be a nice, clean setup. If it's too loud for your taste, run 2.25" or 2" piping out to the rear bumper and put a couple of chrome tips on it. I'd love to see that project when the engine is in... Very cool... :thumbup:

On most production cars the muffler placement is driven by where it will fit and how loud they want the car to be. I have a 2005 Mustang with cats (that muffle a little) before the X pipe, and mufflers as the last item in the exhaust. My SBC 350 has mufflers about 2/3rds of the way back because there is lots of space underneath my truck.

If your SBC is less than about 325-350 HP, 2 1/4" pipes should work fine and they will be easier to fit in the chassis. With an H pipe you can usually go with a more open muffler, but maintain a more pleasant tone. X pipes often help high end HP, but they shift the exhaust tone higher than an H pipe. For a relatively low-pitched performance car tone, many cars use some type of Turbo muffler, like those from Dynomax, Summit, etc., and a good H pipe. For a little louder tone, a chambered muffler (especially a two chamber) like the Flowmaster might be what you want.
