I have tried msd 6al box's with no luck. I have heard of mallory and summit box's but never tried one, and most people around my area swear by msd so no one here to tell me how they run.
I would like an upgrade that would give me a little performance, but mainly fuel economy and cleaner plugs.
Any ideas or experiences with ignition upgrades would be helpful thank you

The MSD has a pretty good corner on the market; their ignition boxes are at least as good as the rest.
The thing you are fighting is the camshaft. If you really want a significant improvement from the engine's efficiency at lower engine rpm, swapping out that cam will be necessary.
If you are bound to keep the cam you can advance it 4 degrees to close the intake valve earlier to build more cylinder pressure sooner, but that's a band aid approach. This assumes the dynamic compression ratio won't be pushed too far upwards to cause detonation, and might cause you to need premium fuel if you aren't already using it.
