Muncie 4 speed trouble

When under power my Muncie M22 pops out of first gear, any suggestions as to the problem?

I was planning on doing a complete rebuild but after seeing the prices I think I'll just try to fix the only problem it has instead. The new project is going to cost a bundle and I figure this may be one way to save a bit.

under the synchronizer sliders there are three small rectangle shaped pieces, if these are worn and the slider is worn this can happen. the small pieces are called shifting plates. also if the pilot bushing is worn the movement of the input shaft, will cause it to come out of gear. any worn bearings can also cause the problem. you really can not tell without a disassembly and inspection.

A small parts kit isn't gonna cost much. It will provide all the bearings, gaskets, thrust washers and junk you'll need. If you need shift forks or sliders, they dont cost much either.

the first thing I'd do is knock it into first with the engine off, and then remove the 1st/2nd shift tab from the shift post on the side cover and then take a small cresent wrench and see if you can shift the post further into gear with the wrench. If it does go further into gear, you simply have an out of adjustment linkage arm. Shorten it until the shift tab lines up with the shift post flat spots.

If you eliminate linkage adjustment from being the problem, pull it out for a rebuild (you can do it yourself).

The best way to save money with a tranny is to replace bearings, sliders, and forks as needed before worn parts fail and break good parts. It gets real expensive quick when a $0.02 bearing eats a cluster gear.

Look at the shifter...if you have a compitition plus style shifter, There are 2 stop bolts on the front and rear of the shifter..... The one towards the front of the car controles 2nd and 4th.... the one at the rear controles the 1st and 3rd... this is the one you want to back off,, try 1 full turn and see if it helps......
