Muncie hub width

Hey k-star or one of you other knowledgable muncie guys... I just picked up a box of miscellaneous muncie parts. One of my original hubs has slight damage, and a much better looking hub was in this pile of parts. Holding them side-by-side, though, I notice a difference. The 'gear' surface on mine is almost a quarter inch wider than the other. The total widths, though, if you include the center portion, are identical. Are these interchangable? I have a price list of new parts, and according to this, a hub is a hub.
My muncie is a '65 m20 by the way.
Thanks.

hubs

Yes,, one should be 1" wide and the other is 1 1/8" wide...

The 1" wide hub is for the later ( heavy duty style) syncronizers.

The 1 1/8" wide hub is for the early (64/65) standard duty syncronizers... These early syncronizers are known to break, I always update the early transmissions with the better syncronizers. It's a easy swap... just order a rebuild kit for your ealry transmission with the later syncronizers, and use the 1"hubs.
