Accelerated wear will occur if you don't master the art. Practise with 2 fingers on the shift lever, if it goes in smooth you're on the money, if not try again, but be gentle. When you've got it sussed wear will be less than using the clutch. Ask anyone who rebuilds road rangers, I've seen them worn across the gear teeth at low miles by bad drivers and fine at over 400,000 miles when used by a DRIVER.
First practise knocking it out of gear rolling to a red light, it wont come out under load, but it will on overrun, go from there.

Got some practice just the other day when the double nut on the clutch rod came loose and the clutch wouldn't disengauge. That was sure a fun time (sarcasm). But I can see were it is a good skill to master.
