Muncie question

Hoping someone can give me some guidance here: I have an M21 and two of the shifter shaft seals are leaking, which I understand is par for the course for Muncies. I saw a reference somewhere online that with a special tool the seals can be removed and replaced from the shafts without taking off the side cover. Is this true? If I remove the bolts that hold the shifter linkage to pull the old seals and put in new ones, aren't I dropping the shaft inside the case? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
sr

The shafts can't fall into the case because the other end of the shaft is the connected to the shift forks, which are around the syncronizer slider rings. Everything is held in place, there is no way the shafts can fall into the case.

One way to remove seals like this is to drill two small holes 180 across from each other in the steel portion of the seal and thread in a couple small sheetmetal or wood screws to give you something to pull on.

Remove them as stated then install them with a properly sized deep socket and dead blow hammer.

Quick and easy seal puller

Slip a steak kinfe between the shaft and seal and pry the seal out.
This method workes much easier than drilling a hole and using a screw.
