What is the number on the side of the main case??

How many rings around the input shaft??

don't trust the rings on the input shaft completely, I have had one lie to me. The best way is to pop the cover and count the teeth... And you can inspect the insides while you're in there.

Put the tranny in 1st gear, then count how many turns the input shaft makes per single full turn of the output shaft. 2.5 turns means it's an M-20, with a 2.52:1 low gear. 2.2 turns means M-21 or M-22, with their 2.20 low gears.

You're in 1st gear when the middle shift shaft is as far clockwise as it will go. The shift shaft will move easier if you turn the input shaft while you're trying to shift it.
