Just wondering what kind of music everyone likes/listens to.
I like a mix of stuff but probably have a different taste than most of you. I like "chill style" rap, mostly listen to Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco, Brenton Duvall, Jeremih, and Wale. I also LOVE the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Yea, i know. lol

i can listen and have been to concerts for just about every kind of music. I just love music. Right now I am listening to "Indie".

Being an old broke down musician that gigged for way too many years, I grew to like almost every kind of music as long as it was done well. Of course I like some types better than others. Having been raised during the birth of Rock and Roll, in the Country and from Texas makes my music collection consist of Rock, Blues, Country and Southern Rock.

However, I must admit that I do not like Rap music and I don't consider it music at all. To me Rap is a vocal attitude with percussion as a background. Now, after saying all of that, I do have grandkids that disagree with me but "hey" I did the same with my parents and grand parents when they put down Rock and Roll.

I think rap gets a bad name because of all the "gangsta rap". I think those guys are just ignorant. There are artists out there that actual have a message in their lyrics, its just that they don't play that type of music on the radio which i'll never understand.

You are probably correct - - - I have a hard time understanding what they are talking about so it's probably a "serious communication break down" on my part. However, I look for a chord progression and melody of some kind when I'm listening to music and that could be my problem also.

I also relate to what you're saying about not playing your type of Rap Musice on the Radio - - - - when I was growing up in the 50's they went so far as to "BAN" Rock and Roll but it didn't last long because the teenagers were the ones that bought the records and their voice was heard loud and clear.

I'm not a big fan of hip hop or rap, but a lot of my friends are. I don't know if I would call those lyrics genius, although it's unfair to make such a blanket statement about urban music that's retarded or without talent.

Artists like Common who say things like,

"We got arms but won't reach for the skies
Waiting for the Lord to rise
I look into my daughter's eyes
And realize that I'm gonna learn through her
The Messiah, might even return through her
If I'm gonna do it, I gotta change the world through her"

Are a good example of intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics laid over what could easily be called music. The song is driven by a very catchy stand up bass line. You just have to wade through a lot of young male posturing which is prominent in all "youthful" genres - including my favorite - which is heavy metal. You have groups like Iron Maiden who write epic progressive songs with lyrics based from Robert A. Heinlein novels. On the other hand you have a lot of what get's played on the radio which amounts to Cro-magnons bellowing over distorted guitars about shallow boy-girl relationships.

I have XM satellite radio and i love it. Driving to El Centro the other night for a work assignment, through the desert, full moon, deserted hiway, Hotel California comes on, it gives me goose bumps. Deep tracks, plays music I haven't heard since I was a kid, Janis Joplin singing Ball and Chain, gawd what a voice! Bluesville, John Lee Hooker, between the 2 stations I am in music heaven and i can't even begin to name all the great artists! I can say I don't like rap, most of the metal from the 80's on (there are a few) most new country, but i do think there are some great rock/pop people out there with new music.

I don't really listen to Common but he does have some good lyrics. I like Cudi's metaphors and his way of explaining things, very indirect.

I can understand that. I hope you don't get the impression that I slighted you in my post, I believe we all see (and hear) things a little differently. I think the most important thing when it comes to music is having people actually analyzing and enjoying it for it's musical qualities and not just using the shallow metaphors as a billboard for their lifestyle. Just about everyone that posted has some love of music that extends beyond background noise for every day life.

It's also my belief that style (musical or otherwise) is generational and a lot of music is not forwards-compatible to most people. I was born in 86. Not much music after 95 that I get into, though there's some. Most of what I like is considered before my time. Not many people that are older that solely listen to newer music, you know?
