I have a 1931 ford that has a 1983 Mustang 8" rear end with 4 lug axles and very small drum brakes. It has a rather stock 302 with an AOD trans. I think I would like larger brakes and 5 lug axles. What will fit if any for a axle conversion and larger brakes. They do not need to be disk brakes. I have not driven the car yet as I am in construction. Maybe it will be fine. As I see it I have several options. 1. keep it the way it is. 2. Change the axles and brakes. 3. Put a new rear end under it that has 5 lugs and big brakes. I would like your thoughts about this. '83 Mustang would have a 7.5" axle.. there is no need for the high $$$ stuff. it can be had out of the junkyard. what you need is 2 passanger side axles from a Ford Ranger with 7.5" axle ( 2wd and some earlier 4x4 ). for rear disc brakes, if you want to go that far. later SN95 Mustang stuff will fit on your axle. doesn't matter 7.5" or 8.8" both have the same axle tubes, otherwise the drum brake stuff off the Ranger should swap right over.. Ford Ranger rotors are commonly used for the disc brake 5 lug conversion, because the bearings match. I'm not sure about what needs done with the calipers... just check a mustang site. I know the Ranger axles are what is needed, but Ranger axles got wider in '93 and I don't know if it takes an early or late axle shaft

If it is an 8" rear, it's not an 83, the last 8" rears were in 1978. That gives two possibilities as to what it can be. The first is 65-67 Mustang six cylinder. That would be 57.5" wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face. It should have 10" brakes. Just changing to V8 5 lug axles and drums from the same year is all that is needed. The other possibility is 76 to 78 V8 Mustang. This one will be just under 57" wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face. The bolt pattern on the housing end is different than any other Ford 8" rears. The Mustang axles will fit by changing the bearing retainers, and trimming the spline end of the axle slightly. To go to the bigger 10, or 11 inch brakes, you will need backing plates and drums from an 8" or 9" rear with a small bearing housing. The bolt holes in the backing plate have to be redrilled.

Hi, Actually it is like the 2v/v8 or the 4v/v8 but not the hp4v/v8, a 9". It's not like the six cylinder but like the v8. I think they are different? It is too wide to be a 65-66 v8 8" and does not have the same axle tube shape. That is all I can say. Because the 302 is an 83 date I thought the rear end may have come from the same car.
I have the third member date code id plate. WDY-AA ( a 70's Mustang I think)7KC (?) second line reads 3. 0 0 8 (3/1 ratio and an 8") 2 4 6 D (? a date code?) Is there any other date codes on axles or? I wonder if the third member and axle housing are different years. Thanks for your help. Les

Ford Mavericks also had 4 lug 8".. what is the 4 lug pattern. 4x 4 1/4" or 4 x 4 1/2"?

some maverick 6 cyl also used 5 lugs,and had front Disc brakes early 6's used 4 lug.

A simple way to do it is to find a 1965 or 1966 Mustang v8 car and transfer all the parts to your car. All v8 cars came with 5 lugs. Late Mustang GT models had disk brakes on the front.

its an 8 inch from a 65 mutang, I think they have a drain plug in the back of the case.
also the tube comes out of the centre portion and tapers from 70mm to 60 at about 190mm = 8 ish inches

if its a mustang 2 case, the tube comes out at 70mm but tapers to 60 much sooner - about 3 inches

as said above, the brakes are finned nine inch internal diameter
the bolt pattern is 4 on 108mm
the bearings are the same, but the layout of the retaining plate differs.

the 5 lug nine inch internal drums are from the ford ranger, bronco 2 and aerostar.

i think the stang 2 is 56.5 and the mustang 65 is 57 inch wide, they are both centred pinion axle small bearings 28 splined.

the mustang 2 rear bearing housing is unique to the 9'' brakes



note the 4 holes-retainer, are not layed out 'square' like that small bearing 10 inch brakes.
