get ready to buy a rebuilt mustang II power rack, first question , they offer a quick ratio and standard , whats the difference between the two, does one have a better feel, which one is most recomended, the other question is when looking at a rebuilt rack is there anything to ask for as for replacement parts etc.... any help would be appreciated

well the quick kit makes it turn faster with less turns of the steering wheel.. like it will be a two turn lock to lock compared to a three. the quicker is eaiser if you like to slide around or you have a power house that likw to fishtail

The quick ratio will also give you a better road feel, the only real downside is when parallel parking, ;) :cool:

Power rack should be easy to park with the quick ratio. The first T bucket I built had a 5 turn lock to lock steering gear so I made the linckage to match. the first time out doing slides in the dirt you get into trouble faster than you can steer out of a skid.

I have the standard ratio rack on my car and it is more than plenty. I wouldnt buy the quick turn one if i had the option.

If you intend to power the rack using a GM pump you'll want to use the standard rack rather than the quick ratio. The GM pump puts out more pressure than the stock Ford pump and unless you use a one of the kits to lower the pump pressure the standard rack will feel like a quick ratio unit. The higher pressure of the GM pump will make it a bit more sensitive so if you use a quick ratio rack you won't be able to relax while driving it. For a street rod you don't need a quick ratio rack anyway.

its goin on my 57 chevy truck, which has a manual rack, i was just askin what to look for in a rebuilt rack, just like anythin else these days . people cut cornors to save or make a buck. some of these hot rod parts place sell these rebuilt racks from any where $200-$250, other places like e-bay or auto zone , there selling for$145-$175, i understand the rod shops need to make a buck, or maybe the rod shops have a better guy who builds them

No matter which one you buy make sure you get the correct fittings. If you pick one up at Auto Zone or one of the auto parts stores you'll probably get either a Ford built rack or a TRW built rack (Ford used both) and the hose fittings on these are not interchangeable. There are aftermarket hose kits for them but you need to know who made it first. There are a couple aftermarket rack manufacturers as well but I have no idea what size fittings they use.

The early MII power racks were 3 turns stop to stop and used standard flare fittings (74-75). The 76-78 was 2.5 turns stop to stop and used a sleeve/o-ring fittings. Some think the power steering units are too sensitive in a street rod, but I have been using them since 1990 and have not found that to be the case. Not enough toe in will run you nuts, but if you set it at 1/4" in (max specified), then you will not have any trouble. I have the pressure reducing kit in my 36 Pick Up and can not tell any difference in the driving between it and the 36 coupe which does not have a kit. The steering is quieter in the PU with the reduced pressure. The extra pressure causes the coupe to growl a bit when parking. Both units have been replaced over the years with rebuilt for Autozone and both have been trouble free since installation. It is my understanding that there are only two rebuild installations and one or the other does all of them. Autozone is cheapest because "they buy in higher volume than all the rest". Can't verify that, but I would not ever pay more than what Autozone sells for.
