mustang ii suspension on a 38 plymouth

I need some help guys, I'm trying to install a mustang ii kit on my 38 plymouth. I've been trying to look for some pictures that show the install but no luck. I know read that somebody added fillers to be to install the crossmember. According to the instructions the lower arm hole is 3 1/2" below the spindle height but the crossmember doesn't even touch the frame rails. My frame rails raise & hump over the wheel location. My kit is from Helix suspension. Any help would be very helpful.

I HAVE A 36 PLY MORDOR AND HAVE SEEN MANY MODS TO THIS HUMPBACK FRAME IN ORDER TO MOUNT IFS SUSPENSIONS FROM THE VOLVO BOLT IN TO THE 49/54 CHEVY BOLT IN TO THE MUSTANG KIT SETUP.BASIC MODS TO FRAME ARE TO ACQUIRE SOME ANGLE STOCK AND LAYOUT AND CUT THE STOCK TO MATCH THE UNDER FRAME ARC [MAKING SURE BOTTOM FLAT OF THE TWEAKED ANGLE STOCK IS MAINTAINED AT LEVEL WITH THE REST OF THE FRAME] AND WELD AND BOX INSIDE TO OBTAIN A FLAT SURFACE TO MOUNT THE TANG IFS.****NOTE**** THE RIDE HEIGHT CAN BE RAISED OR LOWERED BY HOW FAR UP INTO THE ARC OF THE EXISTING FRAME YOU WELD YOUR NEW FLAT MOUNTING SURFACE [THE SURFACE YOU ARE GOING TO WELD THE CROSSMEMBER TO] EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT LENGTHS OF ANGLE STOCK I.E. THE LONGER THE NEW ANGLE STOCK THE LESS YOU WILL LOWER YOUR FRONT END THE SHORTER THE MORE YOU WILL LOWER.MEASURE,MEASURE,LEVEL,LEVEL.ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR NEW BOXED IN SECTIONS WELDED AND SMOOTHED YOU CAN CUT OFF THE TOP OF THE FRAME HUMP TO MATCH THE NEW LEVEL BOTTOM SECTION AND SMOOTH THAT UP TO PAINT.I SEE YOU HAVE MARKED YOUR AXLE CENTERS,I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU ***** PUNCH YOUR C/LINES SO YOU DONT LOSE THEM IN THE PROCESS IN A NUT SHELL YOU ARE REMOVING A SECTION OF THE HUMP AND CREATING A FLAT LEVEL SURFACE TO MOUNT THE CROSSMEMBER AND THE ''HATS'' TO. DON'T PANIC ITS NOT AS DRASTIC AS IT SOUNDS,AND IT IS THE MOST COMMON WAY OF CREATING A FLAT AND LEVEL MATING SURFACE FOR THE NEW SUSPENSION. FOCUS,FOCUS,FOCUS. :welcome:

I Just Had A Brain Burst...i Beleive Fatman Has Filler Pcs.available To Accomplish This Deed That Will Lower Between 3'' To 4''check It Out.

Thanks motorhead I kind of had a similar idea I guess I just needed to hear it from professionals :D . This really helps. :thumbup:

Matts37 I will also post up some pics showing where the crossmember should be so you can see what I mean.

I had even purchased a book " How to build a Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge Hot Rods" I just received today. I will post pics as I go.

Well I have the crossmember mocked up. I moved it up so that it would actually touch the frame rail but it will put me to low in the front end. So I'm going to be boxing in the frame with angle iron. That is what the green tape represents. You can also see the outline of the bottom of the frame rail. I will be cutting out & boxing in the frame above the tape to get clearance for the upper control arm. One question should I set the front end a little higher than the finished ride height to compensate for the weight of the motor.

does it have 2" drop spindles?
if so, I think you would be better off to take them off and push the crossmember up

Yeah it does have 2" dropped spindles. I was actually thinking about putting the standard ones on. I think I would still have to box in the top for the top arms.

what is the measurement from the bottom of the green tape, to the bottom of the frame?

You know without going back out to the garage it is about 2 1/4".

I would get the reg spindles and put the crossmember on the bottom of the frame :thumbup:

OK I went out to the garage it is actually 1 3/4". When you say put it to the bottom of the frame do you mean the bottom of the crossmember to bottom of the rail? That would push the crossmember way up in order to gain clearance for the top arms?

you are just adding the angle iron to make the upper arm mounts?
not for the crossmember to fit on

Correct, but I think I will box in the bottom as well to beef up the frame. As you can see I will be cutting out a lot of the frame. This will also allow me to attach more of the crossmember vertically.

i am not sure i understand whats going on here
in the second pic - is the crossmember going to be where it is shown?
or will you cut it on the lines drawn with the marker?


in the pic with the tape, are you planning on cutting the frame off, at the top of the tape line?

by the way, where in wa are you
