It would be a matter of what you like and what you can live with. Are you keeping the Standard and not going with the Automatic. Myself, I have had problems with the 3 on the tree in a 55 chevy I had. I had a 78 datsun a 78 Ranchero a 69 chevelle an 86 Cutlass all at the same time. The Chevelle, which I drove the most was auto on the column. One day I was working on the 55 backing it into the garage and thought I was in the 69 chevelle. I positioned the car just right and put the shifter all the way to the left and let out the clutch and went into the back wall of the garage. If you put it on the floor, just keep all the parts. You can always carper over the hole.

Are you restoring the original '53 oil splasher 235? I highly recommend you don't do this. Rather get a '55-'63 235 which has full oil pressure to all bearings. MUCH better engine. I had a 3 on the tree on my '53 Chevy pickup tht kept locking up. Got rid of the whole mess and installed a 200R4 OD automatic on my 235 with shifter in the tree.
