My 283

hey guys I have a motor that's supposed to be a 66' 283 SBC from a 66 bel-air.

I have no reason to not believe that this is what it came out of, But I just wanted to know for sure incase of re-sale, so I truly know what I got.

The block casting # is 3849852 and the ID stamp right in front of the passenger side head is F0828F.

The last letter F was very faded so it could be something else like "E" mabey, but i'm pretty sure its an F.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!
Danny

belair

So the final F means there's no chance this motor came out of a 66' belair????

F means 1957....

Can you tell me if there is any of these same codes that end in a different letter ?? POSSIBLE LETTERS: F, E, A, H
It's just so faded that I can't be sure which it is, but I was told It was a 66', Would any of these other letters indicate it was a 66???

What would a 66' 283's last letter be??? (better question) lol!!

Thanks you very much for lookin BTW!!!!

Danny

You can tell if it's a '57 block by looking for side motor mount holes.
If present, it's not a '57 block.

You understood correctly.
'55,'56 & '57 Chevy V-8's did NOT have the now normal side mount locations for motor mounts.
BTW, a quick google search of the casting number you listed produced this web site: http://www.v8s-series.freeservers.com/sbc.htm which says the number translates to a '62 - '67 283...
