My 911 Project

I started my Porsche 911 restor-modifaction yesterday. This is my personal car. I will be using all SPI products for the first time on this project, except for the base coats which will be PPG DBU or DBC.

Yesterday I fit a set of later Carrera rear flares which are 1.5" wider than the stock flares for this early car. I made my cuts and fitted the edges for welding. I plan to gas weld and hammer weld these seems. It will essentialy look like a very smooth and clean later Carrera when it is finished. I will do a few "Chip Foose" type of mods to clean up and blend the body components in a little slicker. Final color will be Signal Orange (bright like Ford Grabber Orange) with blue Carrera graphics.

My Webshots page of projects is at http://community.webshots.com/user/evill914 if you are interested.

Regards,
Evill Ed

Evill Ed,
That is a nice Porsche project. A co-worker of mine is looking for a 911 for a project like that. He is in no hurry cause he wants to find the right one. That's the hard part. I'm gonna show him your pics I know he'll appreciate them. Keep posting your pics as you as you go. She's gonna be a nice one when it's done.

Sweet I love Porsche rides... it will be fun to watch it come along... Enjoy it... I would use the DBC line of base from ppg... they claim it has better metallic control and spray the newer bases with pearls much better... I dont really see a difference when using it, but it is the newer better base line... DBU is the older outdated line... I use ppg myself, so I am not ragging on them persay, just giving you my opinon.... If you can get the color you want from RM-Diamont, you will like it much much better... killer base, with the best metallic control around hands down.. The epoxy primer and clear choice you have are top notch too, dont think you could have chosen a better line IMO... Best of luck and keep the thread alive with pics... it helps keep you going too

That is one car I REALLY want to own one day, a 911. It looks like you are doing it proud, do keep us informed.

And remember, Foose isn't doing the car. If you have been influenced by him (a VERY good influence) that is cool. But it isn't going to be a "Foose car", it is going to be a "Evil Ed" car, give yourself credit you will deserve it!!!

Thanks for the support guys. I promise I will add updates for you guys.

I have a wide range of tastes in cars and motorcycles. I just happen to really dig Porsches . This particular 911 was a West Coast car, it has been on the East Coast for the 3 years that I have owned it. Fresh engine, trans and suspension, all that is left is the body and interior. The body is very clean, no rust or accident damage, amazing for a 29 year old car these days. Just one cheap repaint which is peeling off the original finish nicely for me.

Thanks Brian, your right, it is an Evill Ed built car and I "will" take credit for all of it The Foose reference was in regards to subtle changes that make things flow nicely.

Regards,
Ed

Paulo, you may want to try http://www.thesamba.com/vw/ for an engine and trans. People post there from all over the world, you may get lucky and find someone local to you.

Good Luck,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Small world, and nice project! I look forward to seeing pictures of the welding. It's going to be a lot of work but very rewarding I'm guessing. I have to get going on my Ghia project hopefully next winter...a lot of similar work welding on my rear flares etc. I'm going to stretch the front fenders.

John

Hey John, I was originally going to stretch them using the techniques in your video. Then I wound up cutting a perfect set of Carrera flares off my brother in-laws 911 to put Carbon Fiber RSR flares on it. So I figured I would just "cut" to the chase and use the factory sections. I may stretch the front flares a bit for a custom look though, we'll see how the rear goes first.

I've been practicing my hammer welds with good results. I've done small stuff, like motorcycle fenders with fusion and hammer welds, but these flares will be the longest seams that I have ever done. I'll take my time with them.

Yeah, I've been waiting for your Ghia project to see some action too

Regards,
Ed

Well, it's been awhile,so I thought I'd post an update.

The car and body are completely stripped. The flares are welded on the rear. I gave in and Mig welded them. With some careful grinding and hammer and dolly work, I got the seams very nice. Maybe the best ones I've done to date this way. My goal is to get the body into the SPI Epoxy primer this weekend.

Here is a flare picture.

Ed

I've been watching your thread with interest. A bright Orange with blue graphics Carrera will really stand out. Your 911 sure look different stripped. Looks like you are going to do it right by painting everything inside as well. It's a lot of work but will be worth it. I saw your Husky brand upright compressor in the background in your picture. Home Depot sells that brand here in Oregon in 5 hp and 7.5 hp models. The CFM sticker on the tank is impressive. Do you like it? which hp do you have ?
