How is the behavior on light to moderate accelleration? Does this issue occur ONLY when starting from a stop, or anytime that you put it (the engine) in a "high fuel demand" situation? Just from what you mentioned initially, it's difficult to get a clear picture. {However, if I had to go on that alone, my first guess would be that you might be encountering a "stumble" from an accellerator pump that's getting worn-out}, but there are MANY other possibilities that can be considered as well. So how about a bit further information please? Given enough details the fine folks on this site can probably help you get it nailed down. -Jim

Yeah, ^^
Missing as in not running on all 8? Or a stumble when the throttle is nailed? Many variables and unknowns here. Stand at attention and clarify at once, private!

Well don't Matt it @ every traffic light!
J/K Check to see if the carb is tight might be the accelerator pump like said above. Tell us some more about it ,how old is the base plate gasket? R

AS RK said; "Tell us some more!". What carb.is on this engine? How long since it was last rebuilt? How old are the plugs/wires/cap/rotor (Just to eliminate possibilities)? Does it do this at all engine and atmospheric conditions? How long ago did it start doing this, and was it a sudden onset or a gradual thing?. All of this would be helpful to know for the sake of trying to help you nail it down. For curiosity's sake; do you know how to check if the accellerator pump is giving a shot of fuel? That would be one EASY thing to check. Please help us on this site to help you by giving as complete of information as possible. Many people and lots of experience on this site, but no one here has a crystal ball (that I know of). Please give more details.-Jim

I suppose if he gave us his vin # we could report his engine missing to "The National Center for Missing and Exploited Engines"
-Jim ....But seriously folks..... |

I have seen these 'vague' symptom's before. 1. The carb not going 'full' throttle. 2. Accelerator pump adjustment (recently from lack of octane, people purchasing the cheapest fuel they can find) 3. Old cracked fuel supply hoses. (from on top of the tank, to the fuel pump) This newer blend of fuel attacks the older hose, and rot's it out, along with the 'rubber' parts in the carb. 4. The distributor vacuum advance diaphragm ruptured. 5. The centrifugal advance 'stuck' in the distributor. 6. A plugged fuel filter, or water in the fuel. 7. Vacuum hose routing to the distributor. 8. The use of a 'sealed' gas cap in a application where a 'vented' cap should be used. That's enough check's for now, or until we get more information. |
