I just bought my first 350 4-bolt today for $500. It runs and has 120 compression on all eight cylinders. The serial # is 14016379. Mortec.com says it is a 77-79. What vehicle did this type of engine usually come from? This one was from a one ton. How much HP did it run stock? It has a Rochester Quadrajet. Is this a good carb? Are they better than the Holleys? How many cfm does it have, or where can I find the information. My last question is this. The original dist was crushed by the seller while loading today. I have an 81 267 chevy smallblock out of my camaro. Will the 267 dist work on the 77-79 4-bolt 350 engine as far as shaft length and proper seating in the dist shaft hole since they are both smallblocks? The 350 4-bolt is going into the camaro, and I figured if it will match up, it will make the wiring a lot easier. Thanks guys/gals for your help. Bill
Quadrajets are great street carbs, as for them being better, there are to some, not to others, matter of opinion, Q-jets flow around 750 cfm there are many sites online on how to use the numbers to decode your Q-jet. yes, the HEI from your 267 will work, as long as it`s not the computer controlled job. I`d recurve it and check the advance it in first. 120 PSI sounds kinda low to me, but it will run with it. If your unsure of the miles on the engine, it maybe a good idea to check the timing chain, if it`s got many miles on it with a factory chain, chances are it`s got a lot of slack, a new chain will aide you with power and mileage. also if it hasn`t been started in a while, it would be a good idea to cycle it on start up as if it were a new engine, or use a oil pump drive and drill to prime it first, I`ve seen many small blocks sit a long time then restarted and wipe out a cam lobe due to lack of lube. good luck.
What does recurve mean? How can you tell if it was computer controlled? I did not see a computer under the hood. It is out of an 81 camaro, are they known to be computer controlled for this model year? My dad thought 120 was pretty good for that year, what do you guys recommend for compression test? How high and how low? Thanks again for your help. Bill
Recurve is to add a advance curve kit, avalible at any part store, lighter springs and different weights. the computer controlled distibutor will have a 4 pin connector plug on it besides the others that plug into the cap itself. I believe it was 81 when they first added computer control, but I have seen it on 80 models. 120 psi isn`t too bad, it just does seem low, as most stock small blocks I`ve checked had 135 to 150. perhaps after running it a while check it again. as for timing specs after you recurve, you`ll want 12 degrees before top dead center at base, and 36 to 38 degree`s in by 3000 RPM, if it detonates, slow it down 2 degree`s then test, until the detonation goes away. then your set. good luck.
