Dan, the goo behind that carpet is that hot glue crap GM used in the 80s(like cutlass/regal doors with the carpet across bottom). it looks like tan rubber caulk or something and is a pain to get off without sanding. i have a small air sander/grinder that i use 80 grit pads on to remove the glue residue and rough up the plastic for better contact glue adhesion.
Jack, i will keep an eye out when i hit the yards this week for a pull handle. if i see anything, i will let you know.
