Is my gearing that bad?

Ok I know that I am not running the right gearing. Thats whats left to complete my racer.

I have a 406 SBC comp cam rated to 6400 rpm. solid lifters, stall rated at 2500, tire height is 24 in. THM 350. My gearing is I think 3.08. I cant get my engine to rev past 5000 in second. I shift it drops to 4000 in third.

So is my gearing making that much of a difference? What kind of qtr mile times should I expect with that stock rear?

My replacement would be a rear with 3.89 gear, 28 in. high x 11 in. wide tires and a posi.

Usually gearing won`t effect how high it`ll rev, but it can play a role in how long it takes it to get there. Other factors enter the picture. The valve train controls how high the engine will rev, but there`s other things as well, Ignition, spark timing, fuel. If the engine is running out of fuel it`ll limit it`s rev, if the spark is weak it`ll limit it. Do your valve springs match the cam? if not this is likely where the problem lies, if the valve train is set up to match the cam, then I`d look elsewhere such as the ignition or fuel system.

308 is not good drag racing, 411 good for racing and street, 389 ok too.

My Ignition set up.

My ignition set up is,

Proform HEI Distributor 50 kV to 7500 rpms.

Accel plugs, 8.8mm wires.

Street avenger carb 670 cfm vacuum secondaries
Holley Volumax 160 gph electric pump.

My valve springs were matched to cam along with the head and manifold.

I dont think its fuel because I had to jet the carb down a step in the primary. But could it be a fuel pressure adjustment? Should I raise the pressure to say 8 psi? Its at six right now.

I was hoping someone had this setup before they put their race gears in. It will go through the entire range in 1st, then shifting will get it to just over 5200 rpm then stays there, If I shift to 3rd. It drops due to the gear change and never recovers the rpms. It just stays there at WOT at around 4200.

Rolling run (starting in second) the car maxes at 4500 rpm in second.
