my new 472

i just picked up a 472 on saturday for my '67. it came with the th400 bolted to it, it cost me 200 bucks. he said it was a '73 but it has stock hei so it has to be a '74. unless it's actually a 500. he said that he was sure it wasn't a 425(i hope) after i made the deal for the caddy motor he said that he just happened to have a '67 C10 that he was parting out. so, for $375 i have another '67 that i'm picking up on this coming saturday. its a 3/4 ton and i have a 1/2 ton but i was really just interested in the front sheet metal. it has no engine but it does have a 420 muncie(?) in it. i'm going to try and include a pic of the 472(wish me luck)

All 472's came with point dist. They did put HEI in the 500 in 74. Looks like you may have a 500 if he's sure it's not a 425.

all of the information i've found on the net, i think, said that '74 had hei and was also the last year for the 472. at first he said it was a 73, but i noticed the dis. in the pic. and asked if he was sure, he said not really but he's sure it's from the mid 70's. it could be anything. i'm kind of hoping it's a 75 or 76, because that means that its a 500. i'm not sure what it is, but it's mine and its big, lol. i'm gonna go down this weekend and check the stroke on it. that should clear it all up. the engine is at my new house that i'm moving into in june. it has a garage(sweet) and that will be where i'm doing the swap at.

You may be correct, but all 472's I've seen were point dist. The 74's were kind of an odd-ball, different heads and pistons. That's the one I have, if you change pistons you have to change heads also. And it came factory with points.

The Cadillac big block engines were offered in these year ranges.
The HEI ignition distributor can be fitted to the points type engines without modifications (other than ditching the ballast resistor).
