my local borough recently sent out a newsletter saying that you cant have a car in your yard if its not registered and driveable!i have 4 nova's,1969-1972 and all are my pride and joy.but now it seems like i might have to get rid of em because some people dont like cars!i am limited to garage space and currently have 2 outside not registered.a 1969 and a 1972 the other 2 are in the garage.i dont really wanna take my babies out of storage too please my borough!i considered antique tags since you dont need inspection but i really dont think its up to other people to say what i can have in my yard.can anybody help??????i wont sell em for someone elses benefit.if you have any info please post.ty
jeff where abouts in pa are you from..i live in clarion county..anyways i'd put the classic tags on them and tell the borough to get a life..
they must just be jelious of you nova collection..lol..-.-chad
Put them behind a fence that's tall enough for anyone not to look over without assistance, then it's none of their damn business. Out of sight should be out of mind. good luck, Dan

This is probably your only alternative. Local municipalities do have a right to limit "junk" in people's yards. I know they're not junk to you but to the old lady across the street or the guy at the corner they are. It has to do with community standards and the right of the community to enforce those standards to keep up property values. This has been challenged in court many times and each and every time the property owner looses.
Hold on a minute, wait and see if they actually say anything to you directly before you do anything with the cars. The borough I live in has the same rules, and there has always been at least 1 car sitting in the driveway untagged and uninsured. Never have had any problems. If your worried, put car covers on the Novas outside, people will be less inclined to want to complain.

well you guys all got good ideas.but they say you cant just cover them with a cover.not sure if a fence will work, they probably would say its still in the yard!however i do own a 140 lb. rotweiller/boxer,maybe him and a fence would work!or maybe i will just get antique tags and park them all over the street.still undecided since i cant really afford all the insurance i would need to register 2 more cars.but i like the fence and dog idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wildjeffpa your worrying about this way to much, they sent everyone in the borough one of those newsletters, not just you. The borough won't show up one day and tow your cars away, you'll be given a warning, then you should worry about spending money on tags to make sure your cars can't be taken.
Do you have room for a shipping container? Two cars will fit easily in a 40 footer, and they can be had for around $2000 USD. 8 x 8 x 40 foot, weatherproof and vandal proof too. They'll even deliver. Look at iport.com/sales, or portablecontainerservices.com, or a bunch of others. N America is floating in them, because they cost about $4000 to build in China, and return shipping is over half that. They make good workshops too. Full sized cars are snug on sides, but u can exit window after driving in. In many localities, since you need no perminant foundations, no building permit is required..it's like a garden shed.
Lacking that.. considered moving (to civilisation? Cheers..

I have insurance on my Nova through State Farm, it's a Hobby Car policy and it's real cheap. There's a miliege restriction to it but if these cars never leave the house you'd have no worries there. Good Luck
A few years ago i head of an area..(think it was Illinois, but not sure) that went thru the registration list, took everyone that had an "antique" vehicle, and reassessed them at 'fair market value'... like $20,000 for a 1955 T bird needing work..yeah right!
According to article, numerous peeps had to sell their small car collection to pay bills. Needless to say..they didn't get anything like the 'fair market value' for them. Just a thought.. you might want to investigate with your local congress person/rep the possibility of this happening to you.
They will probably assure you that it's impossible.. and it may be...until they need money.
well i have grundy insurance and its cheap, but didnt wanna insure it just yet.so anyway i got the letter today and it says i have 1 or more uninspected/unregistered vehicles on my property.so i bought a cover for my 1970.and put the 1971 inside till i get it all one color.this is what i need to do in ordere to get antique tag.just hopin to get er done soon because now my good one is outside!really ashame you cant even restore a car in this town.well i wont hesitate at lookin at other houses for sale.ya need alot of money to fight a township,i'd rather just put the money in a nova!anybody know what s the cheapest color 1971 paint color?i'm thinkin about flat black!but i really only need a car with 1 color.take care!
Check your state laws. SEMA has had some luck in convincing some state legislatures that the old car hobby needs some protection from over-zealous local do-gooders. Many states have passed laws that prevent local authorities from banning "ugly old cars" as long as they are pretty much out of sight.
I have a house in Loudoun county Va, (suburban D.C.) With the increase in retirees here, they have nothing better to do but supervise their neighbors as to what colour toilet paper the neighbors are using.. and how often they use it. I recently got a certified (return receipt) letter from the county that i was maintaining 'derelict, abandoned, vehicles on my property, and had 2 weeks to remove them or they would be towed off and impounded, and i'd be fined $200 a day for 'maintaining' them. The "derelict, abandoned' vecicle was "deemed" so by the county because it was over 6 years old and had a car cover on it. Never mind that it had current tags and inspection! I have a spare, and it won't fit in the garage (a VW bug would be a tight fit - tiny garage). The spare is a 1982 Chevy Caprise... ahhhh YEP! it IS over 6 years old!!
I consulted a legal friend, and he advised me that the law in virginia reads that if you park a car on a public street or a commercial parking lot, anyone with a wrecker can remove it - and you're only real recourse is to sue them for the cost of the vehicle (if you can figure out who removed it).. My colleague advised me to fasten the spare to a tree or other 'non public' object on my property. That way, cutting the chain is a felony - comperable to kicking in the door of a house. Just parking it, is comperable to leaving the door to your house wide open - meaning you don't care who walks in and takes anything. By chaining it down, you have an "outward and visible sign" that you expect the vehicle to be there when you return. That very day i purchased a 15 foot length of case hardened chain (the kid selling it to me broke a 36 inch pair of bolt cutters trying to cut it), and a hardened, armored 'anti-drill' padlock - like they use on construction tool boxes. So far, i've had no further trouble.
I'm also looking for property in West Virginia, where peeps are more tolerant of we auto tinkerers. I think part of it is that most of these anal retentives pay $800 for a tune up on a 4 cylinder car (which with electronic ignition and such amounts to little more than a plug change here locally), and are ENRAGED that we tinkerers don't do so. I've been told several times that "That's NOT fair... YOU should have to pay that too...." Fortunately, i'm semi retired, so living out in the country where jobs are scarce is not a major problem. Y'all take care.. keep your heads down.. and watch those ordinances..
Before I moved to make room for the "fleet" as I called it, I had to many cars in a small yard, didn't have a ordinance problem but thought it was just to many sitting around. So myself and 2 other car guys went looking for an empty building to lease. No, it wasn't cheap but split between 3 guys it wasn't to bad and gave us a club house of sorts to wrench in. Not the best part of town either but we secured the building well. Of course a 140# Rocky would help with that to.
You might try to group some guys together to find a space, I'm sure you're not the only local in this bind.
Call your new car club "The Evictions"
Have some one look at the ordinance carefully I was having problem with a neighbor reporting me for everything under the sun Cars included I had one parked in the side yard with no plate. The Local Ordinance only applied to vehicles not parked on the driveway that were not registered and not running. The the inspector came out twice to watch me start the car, he told me about the driveway deal and said if I put gravel down he'd call it a driveway and the old neighbor could get bent. I did and all were happy except the neighbor his grass died in perfect letters that said A**Hole across his carefully manicured lawn, I don't have any Idea who did it but I would have reimbursed him for his cost and bought him a beer if I did.

I got the same letter here in nowhere nebraska town of 750 there on a piece of rental property that has a mobile home on it & its a big lot (its actually zoned commercial) I have 2 novas sitting there a 63 & 65. and I don't rent it any more (its paid 4 and taxs are only $700 a yr) we had bad luck with renters (might rent again if I found the people with deposits and trust worthy) my plan is to move the mobile home and put a 50x75 or a 65x100 building up with a apartment or game room in one end. theres natural gas & water & sewer there . but I moved the novas to the back of the lot and tarped them with Grey tarps, they towed 80 from here in town. they mailed 200 letters. my 72 chevy p/u is in my back yard they said nothing about it.
hey,
from nowhere Nebraska +/- 300 also experiencing like problem. i run a tow truck (don't worry i wont to anybody baby's from there back yard, got to have standards). some of the cars it tow are not good looking any more (burned to a crisp or crushed). I store them in a small lot commercial zoned for body shop, the mayer came over one day to have words about them, because noisy neighbors complaining. I told him it was zoned and the cars didn't stay there for long or were moved from time to time for repairs. so he just asked to keep it mowed and clean not said anything sense, i think he was just trying to scare me. I don't have a fence and might put one in out of sight out of mind, and hopefully keeps vandals out or at least give them some privacy while they are ripping me of :nono: so good luck
