Post Is my Taurus F'ed or what do you think ?

1995, Ford Taurus LX 80, 000 miles
V6, 3.8 L
AXOD Transmision.

So when we bought this car it was fine but a tiny bit of a jerk from 1 - 2 only.

Now 6 months later all at once it started to downshift to 2nd - 1st early so it sounded bad but just slippage.

I noticed the Fluid was burnt bad. Brought it to ford and they ran tests on it (Code VSS, Memory, PPID TEST MONITOR TEST. All pass.

So I changed the fluid myself (never done it on this kind of car)

So it seemed to impove shifing a bit over the next couple of days. Left it sit for about a week while we went down to Idaho.

then I hit the road for a test and it started really clunking in those same gears and now seems like it downshifts really early into 2nd gear and really clunks. Sometimes

Sometimes it seems to fall out of 4 th gear when coasting and then either clunks or almost does instead decides to switch right.

The I noticed it was clunking a bit from park to Drive when stoped.

When I start the car in park and go into drive it clunks.

When I switch to drive , then back to park and give the gas a tap, and the go back to drive there is no clunk.

If I put in park and shut it down, and start it up again it clunks again unless I give the gas a tap in Park 1st.

Works 20 times out of 20.

do you think it could be a cable or sensor that is shot ?

We don't have a trans shop for about a 3 hr drive. So I have to try to deal with it myself. If you can help that would be great.

check your tranny and engine mounts. usually makes the problems your describing.

easy way to check is have the hood open and have someone drop the car into gear while your watching. obviously, don't get run down by your own car. the engine and trans shouldn't move tooo much. i've seen many move so much that the intake on the engine was starting to wear into the hood of the car.

Thanks ummduh,

I did check what you said and I think your right.

The engine is moving alot and the intake is has lost some bolts and is wearing into the inside of the hood.

I am not having a good time locating the bad mount though.

If it is a mount would that explain why it seems to it drops down a gear to early and then loose its drive at 50 mph also ?

Sounds like better news than a new trans.

DUDE, COMMON SERIOUSLY, THE MOUNT THAT IS MOVING IS THE ONE THAT IS BAD. WHICH SIDE OF THE MOTOR IS MOVING UP WHEN YOU STEP ON THE GAS, IN BOTH D AND R. THERE ARE THREE MOUNTS. THERE IS ONE THAT IS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE RIGHT BEHIND THE TIRE, IT IS HOOKED ONTO THE TRANNY, THIS IS THE LEAST LIKELY TO FAIL. THE OTHER ONES ARE DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM EACHOTHER. THE FRONT ONE IS IN THE FRONT OF THE VECH, PASSENGER SIDE UNDER THE PS PUMP AND THE COMPRESSOR. THIS ONE FAILS QUITE OFTEN. THE LAST ONE IS IN THE REAR OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT STRAIGHT BACK FROM THE FRONT ONE.
AS FAR AS THE TRANNY GOES YOU ARE GOING THROUGH THE SAME THINGS THAT EVERY TAURUS OWNER GOES THROUGH. I MY SELF JUST EXPLODED MY FINAL DRIVE GEARS IN MY SHO, I ORDERED A NEW TRANNY AND IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING A SHIFT AND LUBE ENHANCEMENT KIT. IF YOUR TRANNY HAS NOT EXPLODED YET, YOU SHOULD SPEND THE MONEY AND GET IT OVERHAULED AND THE KIT INSTALLED. THE KIT WILL DO YOU PROUD.

I spent $3000.00 to buy this car. I don't know if it is worth putting the cash into or not.

If it happens to be the tranny mount, can that cause the loss of drive and slamming downshifting I explained above.

Or do you think I need to fix the mount AND the transmission overhaul because I am just sick of all this guessing and might be better off getting my beater going. All it needs is a damm master cyilinder and some of those little green trees to get rid of the smell of the the pack rat that made the drivers seat home.

I had the same thing happen to my taurus except that it was a 3.0 with 156k miles and it was a 94...my trannny fluid was also burnt and I had the same noises as your descibing. I also changed the fluid and the filter. I brought mine in and the mechanic told me it was a speen sensor which went bad which is the sensor that tells the tranny when to shift. he also told me that my engine mounts were shot and my alternator was shot.I changed the alternator and drove it for a week then I got a new car and I drove it to the junk yard. and o yea I got 50 bucks for it...
