Agreed with F-Bird. What type of rocker? Stock? Lots of cam for stockers.

Also, running "rough" is not necessarily related to the clatter. Generally, a "tight" valve will cause a "miss", and a "loose" one will clatter. Do a compression test and/or a leakage test. Make sure of the conditions inside.

Jim

thanks for the advise, I'll inspect the faulty lifters first, I was thinking I might replace cam and lifters anyway. I have long slot rockers and no coil bind.

Here are some things to check while you're looking.

Ok you got oil up top.
The right rockers long slots.
No coil bind.
All rockers moving the same amount.

If this is a new motor, or a new cam, maybe you got junk in the lifters, Assembly lube, or dirt, what ever. Here is what I would try first before tearing it apart. Whatever lifter is ticking run it down, bottom it out (with the car off of course) squeeze everything out of the lifter then reset your lash. It would be better to put the particular lifter on its base lobe of the cam. Fire it up and let the lifter re-fill and see if that helps..

valve noise.

Hi,after checking out everything that has been said in prior postings, with no results,,drain your oil,add 2 qts of trans fluid (ATF) to the replacement oil, this is SUPER HI-DETERGENT oil, start the engine,(keeping an eye on the temp guage),it will clean up all the dirt,(maybe the dirt is what causing the noise.) i usually do this about once a year.
