mysterious 396 SS

Hi My name is Brian and I am restoring my dad's 1970 Chevelle SS. It wasn't the coolest one built, but it has lots of good memories. I have always had "why?" questions about the reasons GM did stuff. I'll bet someone out there knows these mysterious answers.

1. Why did they bore a 396 to a 402 and still call it a 396? Did they have a little mishap in Tonawanda... or what?

They came out with the 400 SBC at the same time, so as to not confuse people, they stuck with 396, knowing it was a BBC. At least that is what I have read.

mysterious 396 SS

Huh, So they had a 400 big block in the trucks.. and a 400 small block.... oh wait the 400 big block was a 402... now i'm really confused... (grin) . I guess the car folks pay more attention than the truck folks. I heard all kinds of stories from insurance rates on >400 cubes to mishaps with first time torque-plate bore jobs.... we may never know the truth...

Nebulous question 2. How in the world did they paint the car, overspray the cowl and put those things together so fast without any scratches?

396-402

I read somewhere they kept calling it a 396 so they wouldnt have to readvertise just use the known name of 396.
