narrowing a rear end?

Hey everyone.
Been chattin about my v8 trike and it seems that due to power vs weight i may not want a posi unit.

If not im lookin at maybe a older 6 lug open carrier ford rear with 3.55 or 3.23 gears.

My question is this...
how hard or expensive would it be to take an old rearend and narrow it? Do i need all new axles or can they be cut n repslined? Expensive????

If you have the equipment to do it.

Narrowing a housing, you need to have some way to get it straight. I make a fixture from bar stock. With donut spacers cut to fit the center carrier bearing saddles. Also the outer bearing housing. A steel plate to clamp to each end of housing. Then the housing is cut to dimension. Spacers installed and bar inserted. Tack weld prepped housing in three places, each end. Bar should turn easily. Then weld housing.

Axles are a different matter. If the axle isn't tapered too much from flange to spline and there is enuff diameter to spline. It can be cut and re-splined.

Some rear ends are easier to narrow than others. Most c clip axles can not be resplined. The 9 inch Ford, Dana 60 and 8 3/4 Mopar axles can usually be resplined. I would be careful about using resplined axles. They are not as strong as axles that are made to the correct length. If you break an axle on that trike you are going to be in for a wild ride that you might not survive.

You do need a housing fixture to align the housing ends with the differential bearing bore. If you don't get this straight you can have all kinds of problems.
