Need 10-bolt ID help
I just got a 1974 10-bolt posi out of a Firebird that is going to go in my 48 Chevy Sedan Delivery hotrod. The axle tube code is CM so I think this is a 3.42 gear. The numbers on the ring gear are GM 3984828 13 40 11 73. I think this is November 1973 build date (rear end casting date is September 23, 1973), but what is the tooth count or ratio on the ring gear?
The pinion code is GM 1 11 73 3984829. What does that tell me? Thanks guys. Bear Lake Rodder. |

Looks like you have a 40 tooth ring gear mated to a 13 tooth pinion for a 3.08 ratio. However, since you can see the numbers on the ring gear, why not mark a tooth on each gear and count the teeth to be sure?

Thank you for the info. The seller said it was a 3.08, but the axle tube code is 3.42. Must have been switched at some time in its life. Surprise!
