Need advice on eliminating computer stuff on 87 chevy caprice

Hello guys my brother has a 87 chevy caprice with a 305 in it and it has an electronic quadrajet and has an electronic distributor. The car has been sitting for a couple of years and just got it back up and running.

I don't know the history of the car but I went to advance auto parts and got a rebuild kit for the quadrajet but I did not have the numbers on me but they gave me a basic quadrajet kit which I hope will work. Any how if this does not help out I am wanting to eventually put a holley on this car but I need to get rid of the computer stuff. The transmission is a 700r4 so I know all I have to do with it is have the right brakcet kickdown setup for it and adjusted properly.

The car has an EGR and the distributor is electronic as well. I can get rid of the electronic distributor and put a non computer hei in its place but what do I use for the ignition wire to hook up to it? And I know with the manifold I would need an adapter plate and what about the EGR? Hope someone can help me out here if the carb rebuild does not work good. Am still going to eventually do all this anyways just need pointed in the right direction.

first off how did you find a quadrajet rebuild kit at advance auto,they don't carry anything for quadrajets.and second why would you want to replace dist. and carb?

Ok well first off advance autoparts did have a rebuild kit for the quadrajet and a new float to go with it. Its specefic for that year of car. Anyways why would I want to get rid of the carb and distributor. Well for one thing if the rebuild does not help out and the carb not work better cause it is old then I will put a holley on it and in order for this car to run wth a non computer type carburetor the distrbutor will have to be swapped out for a non computer controlled distributor and an HEI will work well in that regards.

The cost for a new computer type quadrajet is over 400 plus and they are still hard to come by. For half the cost with a little time I can just get a holley and good HEI and be done with it. That is why I mentioned that. Thanks to the other guy who gave me the link appreciate it.

The ECm controlled HEI is easy to turf, all you need is an older dizzy. The ign and tach wires ( if it has a tach) are identical. The ECM dizzy has a 4 (or5) wire harness that connects towards the pass side of the dizzy. Drop the old style dizzy in, and hook up the wires on the drivers side of the cap, and you are done.

Hey thanks for the info on the ignition wires. I kind of had a hunch about the wires being used on the harness now but the 700r4 tranny will the lockup function still function on it ok? don't know much about the tranny lockup feature just that the 700r does not have any computer stuff on it. Thanks again

Eliminating the CCC parts,Carb,ECM, Distr. will cause the lockup to not work. You'll need a lockup kit or 12V & toggle switch.

I would think twice before tearing the computer stuff out. The computer does a good job of maintaining good gas millage during daily driving and the performance is good because when the computer senses full throttle it quits controlling the air fuel mixture and let's the quadrajet do it's thing.

As described above, if you do rip it out you'll have to get a new carb, new distributor and find some way to wire up a system to enable the torque converter to lock up. After all that it will most likely get worse gas millage and not perform any better.

I think you'd be better off cleaning up the quadrajet. You can probably get by with just removing the air horn and cleaning any evidence of old gas residue. More than likely you could gain some performance by checking the secondary throttle butterfly's and making sure they open up all the way to 90 degrees. Most quadrajets from the 80's don't open the secondaries all the way and you can easily bend the small rod that stops them so you can have full throttle.

I agree Shadetree, those CCC Q-Jets flow enough and can be tuned to support a pretty stout engine also.
